Session 3: Sustainability from a scientific point of view – Round Table

Different topics will be addressed, such as the complete Life Cycle Analysis, including the use phase, the contribution of polyurethane products to reducing the carbon footprint of buildings, the challenges of the chemical sector in Europe and the circularity of products based on polyurethane and its raw materials.

  •
  • Chairman: Juan CirujedaManaging Director at PLIXXENT SL.

  • Steven Peleman, CEO at TRIPLE HELIX.

  • Jérôme d’Assigny, Director of Public Affairs, Community Relations and Site Project Management at VALOBAT.

The session focused on the challenges and opportunities related to sustainability in the context of waste management, the circular economy and the role of the polyurethane (PU) industry. It emphasised the need to balance environmental, social and economic aspects in sustainability efforts and discussed the regulatory and technological hurdles companies face when adapting to more sustainable practices.

Speakers concluded by emphasising the need for collaboration between companies, regulators and research bodies. While the challenges are significant, they also present opportunities for innovation. The key to success will be to find scalable solutions that balance technological, logistical and financial constraints, while maintaining a focus on sustainability.

The role of EPR schemes and the need for coherent policies across Europe were recognised as critical elements to improve material flows and encourage recycling. The session concluded with a call for more investment in research and development, especially in chemical recycling technologies, as well as continued collaboration across sectors to address the complex challenges of sustainability and waste management.
